D1X-Rebirth

Descent 1 for Windows 7 and 8 in high resolution. You can play Descent with DOSBox quite fine; sound is good, game runs smoothly. But the resolution is terribly low (320x240). However, there's a source port available for Descent and it's called D1X-Rebirth. All information can be found on the project page: http://www.dxx-rebirth.com.

So, in short, what do you need to play Descent on Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista or XP in any resolution?

Stuff you need

  • Descent OpenGL with D1X-Rebirth engine.A decent graphics card
  • The original Descent game for the descent.hog and descent.pig files
  • You don't have the original Descent CD? Get your copy on GoG.com!
  • The D1X-Rebirth source port
  • With D1X-Rebirth version 0.55 or earlier: patch to update Descent to version 1.4a

Installation of D1X-Rebirth

  • Sponsored links (remove)
Download D1X-Rebirth program files in zip file
  • Copy contents from D1X-Rebirth zip file to a folder of choice, for example c:\games, after which the D1X files are in c:\games\d1x-rebirth_v0.xx.x-win.
  • Copy descent.hog and descent.pig game files from the Descent CD or installation folder to D1X-Rebirth folder, in this example c:\games\d1x-rebirth_v0.xx.x-win
  • Read the README-D1X.txt file from the D1X-Rebirth zip file for additional information about addons, multiplayer, etc.

Play Descent multiplayer levels

  • Copy chaos.hog and chaos.msn to the missions folder, in this example c:\games\d1x-rebirth_v0.xx.x-win\missions

Start and configure the game

  • Descent 1 Automap.Start the game with the d1x-rebirth.exe file.
  • Don't forget to crank up the graphics settings and resolution in the options menu of the game!

About updating Descent to version 1.4a

As of version 0.56 of D1X-Rebirth, the updating of the Descent game files is not necessary anymore. When using an earlier version of D1X-Rebirth, the following applies:

Most of you probably have a 1.0 version of Descent, somewhere. If you use 1.0 files, D1X won't start. And you'll find an error in the gamelog.txt file like "Error: Not enough strings in text file - expecting 621 (or at least 514), found 555". You'll need to update the game to version 1.4a. If you choose to update the game with the official patch, do so in DOSBox. That probably won't work, if you don't have a legitimate copy of Descent. You'll probably get an error when the patch tries to update descentr.exe. That's too bad, because the pig and hog files also need to be patched. In that case use the patch found on the Download misc page of the DXX-Rebirth website (called descent-game-content-10to14a-patch.zip). This patch only updates the pig and hog files. Read the included readme.txt file for instructions.

Hello,
Descent is now released on steam and listed under multiplayer games, but i cant find a way to play it. Do you know how to solve that? It still runs with Dosbox.

Hi Toonyx. I don't have experience with the "new" release on Steam. I do however advise to use D1X-Rebirth; just follow the steps described on this page. D1X-Rebirth supports LAN and internet multiplayer games. Choose multiplayer in the main menu. Make sure your firewall allows D1X-Rebirth and that your router forwards the port you choose. I don't know if there are any active online games... there's a server tracker here.

I just got the new Steam Descent a couple days ago and played a couple levels, a little dismayed at the 320x200 resolution. I simply followed the directions here, copying the pig and hog files into the new D1X folder, and Descent ran great on my machine from that folder. Great job!

Very pleased to hear that! Kudos go to the DXX-Rebirth team! You probably know that you can play Descent II in ultra high resolution too...? Prepare for descent! ;-)

Awesome! ... Exactly what I've been looking for. Descent was a very cool game back in the day. Nice to see someone keeping it alive. This works much better than dosbox and the resolution and effects are great. THANKS!!!
